Samsung Charge Smartphone Review
As one of the latest entries in Verizon's Droid series, the Samsung Droid Charge has a tall reputation to live up to. However, Samsung is more than up to the task. They've had several Android successes lately, including the Galaxy S series and their Galaxy Tab series.
Sporting a 4.3" SAMOLED screen, and with support for Verizon's new, lightning fast 4G LTE network, the Charge is positioned to be a superior smartphone choice. The basic specs are there. However, the build of the device is a little curious. The shape of the phone, while unique, is a little too creative for our tastes. It's as though Samsung was going for a futuristic look and just didn't quite make it. The buttons at the bottom of the phone are also unnecessarily large. This wouldn't be an issue, but with such a large screen, adding even more size to the phone by using larger buttons seems odd.
The phone ships with Android 2.2, and comes with Samsung's TouchWiz overlay on the interface. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we'll refrain from commenting on the looks. However, the interface constantly running in the background does add a considerable amount of lag to the device. It takes several seconds to unlock the phone sometimes, and navigating between apps can be a chore. TouchWiz clearly wasn't optimized for this device.
The Samsung Droid Charge has the hardware to be a superior phone. However, it's advisable to wait for a software update to see if its performance improves. Right now, the device just doesn't live up to its billing.
